September 6 Update
We've had a fantastic first week of school here in 1A! We've been working hard on learning the routines and expectations of our classroom, and I hope your little ones have come home and said that they feel happy and comfortable in their new environment. It's been such a treat getting to know them all and I can't wait to see all the learning they'll achieve this year!
Below are a few important info items and dates.
Important Dates
Sept 11 - Meet the Teacher Night
Sept 16 - School Picture Day
Sept 19 - Terry Fox Walk
Sept 20 - Scholastic Books Orders Due
Sept 30 - Orange Shirt Day
Oct 14 - Thanksgiving No School
Oct 15 - Professional Learning Day No School
Oct 11-16 - Book Fair in Learning Commons
Oct 24 - Professional Learning Day No School PM only
Oct 25 Professional Learning Day No School
As per the note that came home in agendas today... next week l I will be dismissing all (calm and prepared) students into the hallway to meet up with mom or dad in the boot room or in the hallway. Students are instructed to walk to the bootroom and if they don't see their adult then to COME RIGHT BACK TO THE CLASSROOM AND FIND ME. :) They're told to please not go to the office or head down a hallway looking but to come back to the class and I'll help them find who they're looking for. BLAST students will walk themselves down to the gym for BLAST program, and bus students to the bus room. So parents, if you would please decide with your child where the best pick-up place for you is, whether it be inside the school in the bootroom, or outside at a predetermined spot, that would be great! :) If you are concerned about any part of this routine please don't hesitate to let me know and we can make other arrangements.

- Wednesday Sept 11 is Meet the Teacher Night! Please join us in our classroom anytime between 5:30-6:30 pm to say hello! Students are encouraged to attend as well, as I am planning on having them lead you on a tour of our classroom. :)
- Scholastic Order Forms will be sent home next week along with a Scholastic FAQ sheet. Orders are due back Friday, September 20. You can now pay online with your credit card and instructions will be sent home with details on how to sign up for Reading Club Online. You can also continue to order by sending a check to school along with your completed order form. Scholastic will not accept cash through the mail.
- If you have not yet signed up for Class Dojo please do so as soon as possible. If you would like me to send home another copy of your parent sign in code, please put a note in your child's agenda. :)
- If you have not filled out and returned the papers from the 1st Day Handbook (student profile) please also do that as soon as possible. If you weren’t able to pick one up on the first day of school please let me know, I will send one home for you.
- Library books will begin going home next week. Library books will be coming home on Mondays and will be due back at school on Fridays. These books are books that students choose for themselves from our school Learning Commons.
- On Thursday, September 19th we are going on our Terry Fox Walk! We are leaving MMH at approximately 9am, and will walk over to Nicholas Sheran Lake. We go around the lake once where we meet up with the other Westside Schools, and then we head back to MMH. We will be walking with our book buddies, however the Grade One teachers are also looking for 2-3 parents per class to join. If you’d like to join us on our walk (and have a Criminal Record Check on file with the office) please let me know! If you don’t want to walk, you are more than welcome to grab a spot at the lake and cheer us on when we pass!
- Orange Shirt Day
Orange Shirt Day is being celebrated at MMH on Monday, September 30. Students are invited to wear an orange shirt in order to recognize the difficult memories associated with Residential Schools (in an age appropriate manner) and celebrate that ‘Every Child Matters’.

Welcome to Grade One!
Welcome to the world of Grade One!
Grade One is a time of new beginnings, of making friends, and of learning lots of new things. The month of September is an exciting (and often exhausting) transition for Grade One students. They are getting used to full days at school, being here 5 days a week, are adjusting to having less free time than they had in kindergarten and are now doing more independent tasks. If your child is extremely tired at the end of the day, this is normal! Their little bodies surprisingly will adjust after just a few short weeks.
I am delighted to be your child’s teacher this year. Grade one is such a special grade and it is my absolute pleasure to guide your child through all of the experiences that it has to offer. I can’t wait for all of the excitement and growth that this year will bring!
